We are seeking a Community Organiser to establish a community-based waste collection service for all families on the island and support the autonomous management of cleaning operations in the nine sitios of Malapascua.

Job Description

The Community Organiser (CO) will play a crucial role in implementing a solid waste management project within Malapascua Island. The project aims to establish a community-based waste collection service for all families on the island and support the autonomous management of cleaning operations in the nine sitios of Malapascua. The CO will work with the communities of Malapascua in developing and implementing community-based initiatives to reduce waste at its source such as switching to reusable diapers and limiting single-use plastic packaging. The CO will also work closely with the local government in operationalizing solid waste management groups/councils that would oversee community-based waste management initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Community Engagement:

  • Mobilise community members, local leaders, and stakeholders to actively participate in waste management initiatives.
  • Conduct awareness campaigns, workshops, and community meetings to educate residents about waste segregation, recycling, and composting.
  • Conduct advocacy campaigns for waste reduction at household levels such as switching to reusable diapers and finding alternatives to single-use plastic packaging.
  • Organise community clean-up drives, and other environmental activities.

2. Capacity Building:

  • Train community volunteers on waste segregation techniques, composting, and proper disposal methods.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, schools, youth groups, and women’s associations to build awareness and skills related to waste management.

3. Data Collection and Monitoring:

  • Collect data on waste generation, disposal practices, and recycling rates within the community.
  • Regularly monitor progress and report findings to supervisors.

Qualifications, Skills & Benefits

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in environmental science, community development, or a related field. One year work experience in NGOs, government, or similar organisations can be considered in the absence of a degree. (New Graduates are encouraged to apply)
  • Experience in community organising, preferably in waste management or environmental projects.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for environmental conservation and community empowerment.
  • Can speak local language (Cebuano/Bisaya).

Remuneration and Benefits

  • Monthly starting salary: 11,780 PHP
  • Lunch provided on working days
