UP. DOWN. UP AGAIN.
Year 2023 meant that all our activities were finally back online,
including the restart of our diving activities. Diving is part of our
DNA, it brings the magic of the sea back on land. We could see
the stars in the eyes of Mykey and Michell after they went diving
for the first time!
But the power of our work today is coming from the community.
Although we were thrilled to be sailing on our new flatboat and
going on dives, we know that our commitment is to the
community.
So we got the homestays back online, we got interns back in our
office, we got the children back in the water. We also took the
courage to say that our solid waste approach was not bringing
the results we were aiming for and we re-worked how we could
make Malapascua’s land and water cleaner and safer for all living
things.
Our sustainable fisheries program benefited from a renewed
partnership with Blue Ventures, and we now have implemented
daily fish catch digital monitoring in Malapascua and Higatangan.
We have learned how to best support fisher associations in their
relationship with the government and helped them become a
voice for their communities.
It’s hard to summarise in a few lines, or a few pages, the amount
of work and progress we have made. But we hope this glimpse
into our reality will make you want to join us in our fight for the
rights of communities and for the ocean.
